Batten fittings typically house one or two tube lights and are commonly used public areas such car parks, toilets and train stations. A range of battens or starters from trusted trade brands to help fluorescent lights start and reduces flickering while they are on. Unlike incandescent bulbs which have a filament that provides the light , a fluorescent bulb works by ionizing mercury vapour that then emits illumination. The batten creates a stream of electrons that keeps the ionization process constant and steady. These DIY (do it yourself) fittings are shades designed to cover a batten fix to add personality and design to your room.
Unscrew the sleeve at the bottom of the batten fix. Any shade designed for pendants or batten holders will do. They will have a circular fitting at the top of the shade which fits to the light fitting by removing the cone shaped collar, fitting the shade on and then replacing the collar. I think Adrian is close - but it sounds like what you need is called a Batten Holder - BQ do sell them - follow this link :-.
There is not much reflection in a loft so a small bulb is not a lot of use. More importantly, compared to the traditional tube lights, batten light can provide more stylish look. High quality led batten light fittings would play very significant role for the entire project.
